Enquanto Átropos Não Usa a Tesoura (While Atropos Does Not Wield The Shears)

        ENQUANTO ÁTROPOS NÃO USA A TESOURA

Silvio Persivo

que encerra o destino sem alarde ou açoite;

quando mais desejamos deter o momento;

e, ainda assim, guardar primaveras em mim;

que não nos encontre do sonho esquecido;
que o último fio, ao romper-se, afinal,
nos surpreenda vivendo-e não sofrendo o final.

WHILE ATROPOS DOES NOT WIELD THE SHEARS

When reason silently beckons us,

with the shadow of Atropos looming ahead-

the most feared of the daughters of Night,

who brings destiny to a close without fanfare or lash;

when Lachesis, with sovereign hands,

measures the days, the hours, and the weeks

of the thread that Clotho spun on her spindle,

we finally grasp what life has bestowed upon us.

And the soul trembles at the thought of oblivion,

precisely when we most wish to hold back the moment;

when paths, dizzying heights, and warmth still remain,

and there is so much to discover in the depths of love.

What a strange destiny: to know there is an end

and yet, to harbor springs within myself;

to seek in joy what pain could not undo,

and to love as if it were the very first time.

For if the shears are already hovering near the fabric,

may they not find us having forgotten our dreams;

may the final thread, when it snaps at last,

find us living-and not merely suffering-the end.
