Uma obra de arte,
mesmo que de um museu não faça parte,
é objeto de significados escondidos-
nunca o mesmo para olhos
diversos.
Requer, como as melhores
coisas,
uma mistura de sentimento
e, talvez, esforço para o
entendimento.
Muitas vezes, trabalho
para o descobrimento
ou a mera percepção que
dá prazer
em perceber o que algo
pode ser.
A arte não está na
palavra nem na matéria.
A arte, espécie
etérea,
situa-se exatamente
onde um olhar diz que
está-
e pode nem ser lá,
certamente-
desde que isto nos deixe
contente.
BALTHUS: A DIGRESSION
A work of art-
even if it is not part of
a museum-
is an object of hidden
meanings,
never the same to
different eyes.
It requires, like the
best things,
a blend of feeling
and, perhaps, an effort
to understand.
Often, it involves the
work of discovery,
or the simple perception
that brings pleasure
in grasping what
something might be.
Art lies neither in the
word nor in the matter.
Art, an ethereal entity,
is situated exactly
where a gaze says it is-
and it may not even be
there, to be sure-
provided that this brings
us contentment.
