Sonnet XLIII

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,—I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!—and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death

Como eu te amo? Deixe-me contar os vários modos.
Eu te amo com a profundidade, a largura e altura
Que minha alma pode ir e além de onde a visão dura
Para os confins do Ser e da Graça ideal.
Eu te amo ao nível do cotidiano, de todos os dias
Com uma necessidade quieta, pelo sol e à luz de velas.
Eu te amo livremente, como os homens pelas causas belas;
Eu te amo puramente, como eles retornam das preces.
Amo-te com, colocada em uso, uma paixão
De minhas velhas mágoas e da minha fé infantil
Amo-te com um amor que me parecia esquecido
Com meus perdidos santos, eu te amo com a respiração,
Sorrisos, lágrimas, toda a minha vida! E, se Deus quiser,
Eu te amarei ainda melhor depois da morte.
